Interior Design Trends: Matching Your Flooring to 2023 Colours of the Year
Flooring That Works With Your Home Decor
Home improvements and the popularity of DIY grew massively during the Covid-19 pandemic and this upward trend has yet to plateau. If you are looking to refresh your home, one thing you will be looking at is colour trends…what you might not have thought about is how to tie these in with flooring. Gone are the days of the 90’s where you would pick up packs of self-install laminate flooring from your local hardware store only for it to start lifting and warping before the year is out. Although it may be tempting, flooring is an investment and pulls a space together so you should call upon the services of professionals for preparation and installation to ensure safety and longevity. Each Autumn, lists begin to appear across the internet proclaiming what the colour trends for the upcoming year will be. Now as we approach summer, we take a look at those predictions and bring you the actual trends we are seeing in 2023 and present some inspiration for flooring to complement these style trends. That being said, most quality flooring is designed and manufactured to last decades so classic and timeless styles lead the way but versatile and attractive flooring - when carefully selected - can work with your home decor through many years of trends and styles all the while looking fresh and up-to-date.
Predictions for 2023 from experts in the paint and interior design industries included the return of neutrals (different palettes come-and-go but some form of neutral will always be on these lists), soft blues, warm earthy tones and dark bold colours. The common theme across all trend-watchers is that interior design is no longer about playing it safe and producing a home that is a carbon copy of every other home on your street…it is about self expression and making your home an extension of your tastes and personality. With that in mind, lets jump in
Pantone Colour of the Year 2023: Viva Magenta

We start off strong with a deviance away from the blush-tones and dusty pinks of previous years to the Pantone selected bold pinkish red of Viva Magenta. Pantone refers to this shade as unconventional and we absolutely agree. This colour is a deep saturated and bold colour that screams confidence and self-expression. Don’t be fooled by its boldness, Viva magenta is a sophisticated take on bright pink and definitely need not be relegated to a teenage girl's room. The red of the natural dye cochineal is the inspiration for this colour and is known to be one of the strongest and brightest of the dye family.
Viva Magenta in interior design works best as furnishings and detailing keeping the rest of the room soft and fairly neutral to allow the magenta to pop - however we love the boldness of block colouring with this sumptuous shade.

Bringing in Nature with Moss Green

It has been said that Green is the new neutral with homeowners opting for the soft comforting and natural tones of green rather than whites and magnolias as has been popular for the past few decades. 2023 isn’t just about the soft barely there greens we have seen in the past couple of years but has moved into strong, botanical and rich greens such as hunter and forest green as well as the softer olive and moss greens. Moss green brings in a warm undertone of yellowy brown with a rich green interplay making it the perfect companion for warm neutrals such as sand, beige and mushroom.

Popular image sharing websites show a popular trend of painting ceilings bringing lines partway down the wall in shades of moss green with more traditional cream, beige and hessian coloured walls. This colour inversion creates a modern and fun dynamic to room decoration which nods to heritage homes with intricate and even muraled ceilings. The Shades of green that are popular in 2023 work well with both cool and warm accent colours so are surprisingly adaptive and ‘wearable’ even when bolder choices are made.

Maximalist Muted Jewel Tones
Gone are the days of silvery crushed velvet and dove grey walls…Maximalist styling is having a moment and people are stepping out of their comfort zones to incorporate oppulent and energetic colours into the home. One such example of this is the red-orange vibrancy of Raspberry. This more masculine variation on pink has been cropping up in homes and businesses over the course of the year and brings an opulent feeling to any space. Raspberry Blush, Benjamin Moore's Color for 2023 is certainly making its mark on the interior design world...bridging that space between jewel tones and the muted neutrals that are growing in popularity.

In the same ilk but perhaps a little more universal is the slow burn of deep dusky blue tones.

This is not a new trend and you will likely be familiar with its popularity in kitchens in recent years. It has the neutrality to be compatible with numerous styles and tastes and a ‘safe’ way to add boldness…whether in a living room, kitchen, commercial space or just about anywhere really.

The New Terracotta: Rose and Dusty Oranges

If, like me, you were present for the rise of terracotta in the 1990’s you will be happy to know that -unlike fashion trends - the 90s have not come back to haunt us.
Soft earthy shades of pink and clay based oranges with muted and dusty tones are making a comeback as a grounding neutral as well as bolder yet delicate statement accents. Another nod to nature - think incredible desert rock formations - these shades are softer than terracotta but with the warmth and cosiness many of us are seeking.

Although it may seem that 2023 is the year of the extravagant and bold colour… not all of the most popular colourways aim to make a loud statement. The quiet sophistication of creamy shades and warm neutrals push out the icy modern greys that seemingly took over in previous years (although warmer ‘greige’ and grey tones do seem to be holding on in terms of popularity).

There is something so very inviting about the blank slate of warm whites, stones and creams which can be jazzed up or remain minimal with complementing design choices. One of the easier trends to work with in terms of pairing flooring and home decor but by no means do these shades need to be boring. Keep tones warm and inviting yet more muted than bright for a classic sophisticated look.
