Laying patterns in flooring tiles (whether carpet or vinyl) can be used to add character and style to any floor. Both commercial and residential projects can benefit from the almost endless options when combining different products, colourways and designs to deliver a beautifully impactful flooring solution. The creativity available when considering the laying pattern of your flooring solution allows for the ultimate in personalisation…whether in your home or for your business, office or leisure space.
The laying pattern of the flooring solution you select can completely change the way a space looks. Some laying patterns are timeless - think parquet, weave variations and checkerboard - and remain popular year after year. 2021 saw a growth in the popularity of ‘rug features’ whereby victorian and heritage patterns and designs are clustered together in a single area to highlight a feature such as a kitchen island or fireplace. We are seeing some continuation of this style but to a lesser extent than perhaps initially anticipated.

One style that seems to have persisted and grown over the past couple of years is Spa style. Linking in with biophilic designs that have been popular in both home and commercial interior design in previous years, spa style links soft blues and greens alongside textured neutrals creating a relaxing environment drawing inspiration from the sky, land, forest and ocean. Muted tones promote relaxation and create a stylish and airy feel in any space…from the smallest utility room to vast open plan offices. Spa styles lean into one of this year's biggest flooring trends, large format tiles. Although not technically a laying pattern as such, the large flooring tile trend has snuck onto our list and for good reason! But we’ll get back to that!

Geometric Laying Patterns: Trends in Flooring 2022
Home interiors began to play with geometric patterns and designs in 2019 with wallpapers, soft furnishings and accessories. 2022 sees this extend to flooring. The architectural feel of geometric flooring can introduce a striking and impactful aesthetic to your home or business. Large scale geometric patterns in contrasting or bold colours can make a statement whereas a quiet and classic subtlety can be achieved using neutral colour schemes and delicate patterns.

Karndean's Kaleidoscope range takes inspiration from the timelessness of geometric flooring stating '...geometric and abstract patterns have never really gone out of fashion. From the Greeks to the Moroccan's geometric patterns have been used in interiors and architecture for centuries'. The geometric designs from Karndean add eye-catching detail, depth and texture to any room. Within the range there features; cubes, hexagons, chevrons and woven patterns, each individually cut from realistic wood and stone luxury vinyl flooring.

Traditional Laying Patterns: Trends in Flooring 2022
Traditional laying patterns are getting a contemporary makeover for 2022. Parquet has long been a classic choice representing luxury and taste. For 2022, parquet will be heading away from ashy and cool tones wood effect tile to warmer neutrals and honey kissed woods with organic and natural elements such as knots and ‘imperfections’. Traditional patterns such as parquet or basketweave are undeniably neat and organised and that will persist but 2022 contemporary takes on traditional flooring laying patterns will play with tonality and variety of design including herringbone, chevron and block approaches. Larger spaces such as sweeping open-plan offices or large flowing homes will play with larger elements such as full planks or oversized tiles creating the pattern to make a statement.

2022 will see oversized or large format tiles dominating the stone effect vinyl flooring world, large tiles are striking and create a contemporary aesthetic. Large tiles are likely to be concentrated in open-plan spaces to connect aspects of the room creating harmony.
